Every week, as the sun sets and the sky turns orange, Old Town Square in Ho Chi Minh City is filled with people bursting into laughter. Crack Phan Mem Du Toan Escon is a performance featuring traditional Vietnamese humorous poems and songs. Performers or "mem-sang" dress up as animals and perform acts and dialogues which poke fun at each other and the audience. It's not unusual for people to be rolling on the ground in fits of laughter, crying from laughing too hard, or even shouting insults at one another by mistake. It has been performed in HCM City for years now but was originally created by an American volunteer who came to Vietnam during French colonial times. HCM City was chosen as the location because it has the largest population of people of Chinese descent (many of whom are Vietnamese) and also because it is believed to be similar to Guangzhou, which is where many performers travel to China to train at. The show is usually performed on Friday evenings during the summer months, but can sometimes be rescheduled for other days. The shows begin around 5pm and end around 9pm, with the performances ending with a performance by "phantoms" (performers who reach across death by tying their bodies together). Each year, Crack Phan Mem Du Toan Escon invites professional actors from Vietnam to act in costumes appropriate for each animal's role. Each year, there is also a competition for new mem-sangs to join the troupe, and it is open to people of all ages. Each participant must be able to memorize at least 7 poems. Also, though participants are allowed to use props, they do not come with the costumes; they must purchase their own. Most performers spend around $250-$300 for this purpose. The show is usually performed in Old Town Square or on Le Van Huu Street (a main street in District 3). However, starting in 2011, performances will be held at Tu Du Park. There are some who disagree with spending money on Crack Phan Mem Du Toan Escon, because they say that "the show gives customers a poor impression of Vietnam." But others think differently. According to Nguyen Thi Nhan Quynh, the head of the team who helped select performers for this year's show, "despite its bad reputation, Crack Phan Mem Du Toan Escon is an excellent means to showcase Vietnamese culture and customs -- especially Ho Chi Minh City's." What do you think? There has already been 190 performances in 2011 under management of management Nguyen Xuan Nguyen. The festival as a whole has successfully attracted more than 10000 spectators. It aims to promote and expand Ho Chi Minh City's tourism products, as well as the products of some districts, cities and provinces in Vietnam. The first contemporary performance of Crack Phan Mem Du Toan Escon was organised and produced by Thuy Nga Productions at the request of the Vietnamese government and with support from local authorities. This event took place on April 2006 at the Diamond Plaza, Ho Chi Minh City, with over 30000 spectators. eccc085e13
